How vitamin B-12 gets from a gummy into the body

Vitamin B-12 absorption is a handoff, not a single step.

What happens to B-12 from food?

In food, vitamin B-12 is attached to protein. Stomach acid and digestive enzymes release it. The vitamin then binds to intrinsic factor, a protein made in the stomach. That complex is absorbed farther along in the small intestine.

Is supplemental B-12 different?

Yes. Vitamin B-12 in supplements is already in free form, so it does not need to be separated from food protein first. The later transport and absorption steps still matter.

That distinction is easy to miss. Statements about food-bound B-12 should not be copied wholesale to gummies, tablets, or fortified foods.

What happens to cyanocobalamin?

Cyanocobalamin is one of the established supplemental forms of vitamin B-12. The body converts it into the active cobalamin forms used in normal red blood cell formation, nervous system function, and DNA synthesis.

Form names can make a label look more complicated than the underlying biology. The useful questions are which form is present, how much is supplied, and what the evidence supports for that form.

The short version

Food-bound B-12 must first be released from protein. Supplemental B-12 has already cleared that step. Both still enter a regulated absorption pathway.
