The dose, explained
The adult RDA for vitamin B-12 is 2.4 mcg. Oral B-12 absorption changes with dose and uses both intrinsic-factor-dependent transport and passive diffusion. A 2005 dose-finding trial in older adults with mild vitamin B-12 deficiency did not establish 500 mcg as a universal plateau.
